Life's little dance

When life comes
and its journey ends
Where will you stand
among Gods and men?
What have you done
with the life you had
did you help another
or judge and damn
Did you comfort another
when they felt bad
did you lend a hand to another
when there were other plans
Did the gifts you give
come with a price tag
could the gift you give
be a faceless act
What lessons did you teach
when you had the chance
What lessons did you learn
when the challenge passed
what hearts did you lighten
in life's little dance
and now the journey
at an end
Where do you stand
among Gods and men?
About this poem
This poem has a bit of a sad story. A 15 year old boy, Trevor Matthews, the brother of someone I had known since high school, was dying of cancer. One week I felt I should write him a poem to cheer him up, but the words kept coming out wrong. I wanted to write a poem about hope and life, but all the words went to death, so I held back on completing this poem. I wish I hadn't... he died before I finished the poem on January 23, 2007. It did bring peace to his family, and I'd like to believe he knows of it in death. The draft was completed on the 24th, and the final a day later.
I did not know Trever personally. I saw him once as a baby in his brother's arms, and only pictures of him after he had died. The funeral service was very well attended.
